A Change to the Scientific Advisory Board of the Hetzler Foundation

The Hetzler Foundation bids farewell to Prof. Dr. Stein from its Scientific Advisory Board and is delighted to welcome Prof. Dr. med. Dr. phil. Andreas Heinz as a new member.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Prof. Stein for his commitment and the wonderful collaboration over the years. With his scientific expertise and personal dedication, he has made a valuable contribution to the work of our Scientific Advisory Board and to the research funding activities of the Hetzler Foundation. We wish him all the very best for the future.

At the same time, we are delighted to welcome Prof. Andreas Heinz, an internationally renowned scientist and leading expert in psychiatry and addiction research, to our Scientific Advisory Board.

Prof. Heinz is a Senior Professor at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at Tübingen University Hospital. From 2002 to 2025, he served as Director of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at Charité Campus Mitte in Berlin. He also has a strong connection to Mannheim, where he was Professor of Addiction Medicine at the Central Institute of Mental Health from 1999 to 2002.

His research focuses on the neurobiological, neurocognitive and social foundations of mental disorders, particularly substance use disorders and psychotic disorders. A particular focus of his work is on learning and decision-making processes that contribute to the loss and regain of control over substance use, as well as opportunities for more individually tailored treatments.

Prof. Heinz was spokesperson for the first funding period of Collaborative Research Centre TRR 265 “Losing and Regaining Control over Drug Intake” and served as President of the German Association for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics from 2019 to 2020. He is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz.

We once again extend our sincere thanks to Prof. Stein for our time working together and look forward to collaborating with Prof. Heinz and benefiting from his scientific perspective in the future work of the Hetzler Foundation.
